"One Who Can Support a Wife Should Marry"

"One Who Can Support a Wife Should Marry"

Sahih Al Muslim (Book 8)  Kitab Al-Nikah (The Book of Marriage)
Chapter 1, Hadith No: 3231

Sahih Muslim Sharif written by Muslim Ibn Al Hajjaj has a total of 43 books or chapters in which there are hadiths 9200. This book has a huge collection of hadiths. In this book, Book No. 8 has been discussed about marriage. It (Book No. 8,) also contains a total of 241 hadiths, of which we are discussing the first hadith, in the light of other hadiths.

  • O young men, those of you who can support a wife should marry, for it restrains eyes (from casting bad glances) and keeps one from immorality; but those of you who cannot afford it should fast, because it is a means of restraining sexual desire."(Hadith No:  3233. Sahih Muslim)
  • Greetings young people!" Those of you who are able to marry should do so, and those who are unable to marry should fast, as fasting reduces sexual power." (Volume 7, Book 62, Hadith Number: 3. Sahih Al Bokhari :)”
  • A woman approached Allah's Apostle and said to him, "Greetings, Allah's Apostle! I've come to present you myself (without Mahr) in marriage." Allah's Apostle fixed his gaze on her. He gave her a serious look and fixed his gaze on her before lowering his head. She sat down when she noticed he didn't say anything. A member of his group stood up and said, "Greetings, Allah's Apostle! If you don't require her, please marry her to me." "Have you got anything to offer?" the Prophet inquired. "No, by Allah, O Allah's Apostle!" exclaimed the man. "Go to your families and see if you have anything," the Prophet said. "No, by Allah, I have not discovered anything," the man said when he returned. "(Go again) and look for something, even if it's an iron ring," Allah's Apostle stated. He returned after a second trip, saying, "No, O Allah's Apostle, by Allah! Even though I couldn't find an iron ring, this is my Izar (waist sheet)." He didn't have any rida. "I give half of it to her," he added. "Says Allah's Apostle," he added "What is she going to do with your Izar? You will be nude if you wear it, and you will be naked if she wears it." So that man sat for a long time before rising (to depart). When Allah's Apostle noticed him leaving, he commanded that he be summoned. "How much of the Quran do you know?" the Prophet asked when he arrived. "I know such Sura and such Sura," he responded, counting them. "Do you know them by heart?" the Prophet inquired. "Yes," he answered. "Go, I marry her to you for that much of the Quran that you have," the Prophet remarked. (Volume 7, Book 62, Hadith Number: 24. Sahih Al Bokhari :)

The hadiths mentioned above do not contradict each other Allah be praised; rather, each of them refers to a certain circumstance. The Hadith addresses young men and those who wish to be married in general, emphasizing that marriage necessitates sufficient financial means so that the husband can fulfill his obligation of spending on his wife's maintenance and giving her with clothing and shelter.

The word "afford it" relates to the costs of marriage; the Lawgiver wanted to emphasize this point, which is that marriage is more than a contract or a permitted way of fulfilling one's desire; it is a set of responsibilities and duties, and the man is accountable for his wife's upkeep.

The fact that those who can afford it are urged to marry does not imply that those who cannot afford it are not allowed to marry, especially if they fear financial hardship.

This also suggests that if a person is unable to marry, he should concentrate on fasting because it diminishes desire and reduces the Shaytaan's effect, making it one of the strategies of achieving chastity and decreasing the gaze.

The commentary of the hadiths on marriage is understandable

  1. If someone can afford it, that is, if he can afford to run his wife and family, he will get married.

  2. He can get married even if he manages to get along with his wife.

  3. Those who are not able in any way must fast to control their sexual instincts as they cannot get married.

  4. If necessary for marriage and it cannot be controlled in any way, then even for a small thing, even knowing only a part of the Qur'an, he can get married as a wedding gift which will help him to keep his character beautiful

Marriage is certainly a pleasurable and important and honorable chapter in human life so the words of Muhammad (peace be upon him), the messenger of the liberation of humanity, have been highlighted so that we may benefit from it. May Allah help us.
